The Strange End of Vincent Van Gogh
by
Ted Morgan
 About The Drawing

Records indicate that this drawing was purchased in Vienna, probably in the 1950's and was previously in the collection of Bonger.  There are also notations regarding Walther Vanbeselaere the famous art historian and that this drawing was a part of the Aba Ru Collection or ALA Ru Collection, the notations that are available are partly indistinguishable. There is evidence that an appraisal was done by Gordon Bailey Washburn.  Mr. Washburn 1904-1983 studied at the Fogg Museum and graduated from Harvard with a Masters in Fine Arts.  He had a long  and distinguished career in museum administration.  In the 1950's Mr. Washburn was director of the Carnegie Institute Department of Fine Arts in Pittsburgh and it is during this period that he did the appraisal of this drawing.

The drawing features the multi media and mixed techniques that are evident in most of Van Gogh's drawings including fixing the drawing with milk.  The drawing measures 420 x 360 mm on average.  The Ingres paper features the exact watermark, "PL BAS" which many of Van Gogh's drawings exhibit.  The drawing is signed LR "Vincent".
